Homeopathy for Sprains, Strains, and Trauma

Homeopathy is a safe and effective therapy that can be used to treat many medical conditions, such as sprains, strains, broken bones, and other injuries resulting from physical trauma.  Your job as a homeopathic prescriber is to match the symptoms you are experiencing with the homeopathic remedy that will help that exact set of symptoms.  This is done by paying close attention to the details of your condition, and looking at a list of remedies to see which one has the most in common with the symptoms you are experiencing.

Trauma :

Arnica montana: choose to use Arnica after you sustain a traumatic injury which makes you feel sore, achy, weak, or bruised.  Arnica is the most frequently needed remedy for general trauma, such as falls, blows, and bruises.

Hypericum: choose to use Hypericum for crush injuries, such as slamming a car door on your finger.  Use this when the pain is shooting and travels upward toward your body (such as pain traveling from your finger up your arm).

Ledum: choose to use Ledum for bruises in which the wound feels cold, but feels better with cold applications.

Symphytum: choose to use Symphytum for reducing pain and speeding the recovery of bone fractures.  Of course, make sure to see a doctor to evaluate the fracture, set the bone, and cast the injury first.

Natrum Sulphuricum: choose to use Natrum Sulphuricum for injuries to the head, such as bumping your head on a kitchen cabinet.  This remedy can also be used for more severe head injuries, such as those sustained in a car accident.  However, you must see a doctor to evaluate more severe head injuries, as these can have serious health consequences.

Sprains and Strains:

Bryonia: choose to use Bryonia for sprains and strains with sharp, intense pain that is much worse from motion (even very small movements) and better with cold applications (ice packs, etc).

Rhus toxicodendron: choose to use Rhus toxicodendron for sprains and strains with deep aching that is better from continued motion, better with warm applications, and worse from exposure to cold (applications, weather, etc).  This remedy is great when you have pain that improves after walking around for a while, and is worse after long periods of inactivity (sitting, sleeping, etc).

Ruta graveolens: choose to use Ruta for sprains and strains in which the limb feels weak and bruised, and is better with rest and warmth.

The most common potencies (strengths) of homeopathic remedies you can by over the counter are 6c and 30c.  Either of these potencies is fine for most conditions you will treat at home with the information in this article. Typically, it is recommended to take a dose (2 pellets) of the homeopathic remedy 1-4 times per day.  If your condition is more acute in nature, take the remedy 3-4 times per day.  If your condition is more chronic in nature, take the remedy 1-2 times per day.

You can buy homeopathic remedies at most health food stores.  They are usually inexpensive, ranging from approximately $5-10 each.  There are also remedy kits available to purchase online, with approximately 100 of the most common homeopathic remedies.

Note: If your condition becomes worse or you are not sure how to treat a condition, make sure to call or visit a doctor for further evaluation.
